The music of Carl Towns is a mixture of old and new. Being influenced by all kinds of people from The Louvin Bros. and Doyle Lawson to Jim Reeves and George Jones. All of these flowed into Carl to become what you hear coming from him now. Many of Carl's influences were introduced by his parents, who taught him most of what he knows and loves about Bluegrass music and though sometimes the sound may not be purely bluegrass in nature, it has that same foundation that generations have built upon.
Sometimes it is called positive bluegrass because there are not any murdering or drinking songs that are found in Bluegrass music, but there are secular songs in the repertoire, when not playing in a Church setting. These songs are usually about love, or it could be a song like "Baby Girl" or a song like "Misty Mountain Morning". All in all, the show is designed to lift the spirit of the listener, and to comfort the broken hearted, sometimes crying with the broken hearted helps them, so we include some "hurtin'" songs as well.
